Tamra Cherubin, simply known as Tamra, is an R&B/soul vocalist and songwriter. She was born and raised in Rochester, NY. Tamra began singing gospel music as a young girl in the church, and at an early age people recognized that she had an amazing gift. As she grew up, she continued to sing in the church and for fun, she would serenade her family and friends with her favorite songs.
Thanks to her parents, her influences and inspiration came from some of their favorite artists such as Gladys Knight, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Prince and Janet Jackson. Janet’s unmatched ability to captivate and entertain audiences around the world inspired Tamra to want to perform.
In high school, Tamra attended The School of The Arts in Rochester, NY, where she ultimately rounded out her artistic abilities in both drama (major) and singing.
In 2010, Tamra started a band called Forward Movement. With a New Year’s resolution and the support of her students, Tamra formed this full band in mid-January 2010, becoming one of Rochester, NY’s most popular and inspirational funk, reggae and neo-soul groups. Currently, Tamra performs more as a solo artist, singing more of her original songs. While her original musical favorites have not changed; she is further inspired by artists, such as India.Arie and Janelle Monae. Her roots are definitely in soul music but with a revolutionary spirit and strong vocals. She often incorporates “rock flair” to her style.
